Overview

Winner of The Game Assembly Game Jam 2025!

A fishing game where you tase fish to catch them! Made in the Unity game engine over three days for The Game Assembly Game Jam 2025. The theme of the jam was “Current”, which we decided to interpret as both electric current and water current. In this game, you glide along a river in a small boat, tasing fish to score points.

Player movement

Very early on we thought we wanted the player to be able to move around in the boat. However, once implemented, we realized that it doesn’t add much to gameplay. We still kept the movement system, and it did come to great use in the main menu!

Not many places to go, but at least you can stretch your legs!

Scoring & Leaderboards

The scoring system was pretty simple. Each fish had its own ScriptableObject which defined how many points it was worth. I then juiced it up with some UI effects and a microwave ding sound effect when you catch a fish.

The leaderboards were simply ported from Early Bird, an earlier project I worked on. Porting it saved tremendous amounts of time, and it made the main menu look and feel way more complete. It also added some replayability to the game.

Diegetic Main Menu

Since this was a simple game, most gameplay was already sorted. So I worked on just about anything that crossed my mind really. I love interesting menus, so I decided to try making the main menu a room in the game world. The start and exit actions are performed via interactive fish:

Tase the fish next to the door to begin your fishing dream
Tase your fish body pillow to truly wake up

Conclusion

After three days of hard work, we ended up with a ridiculous and unique game that we were all extremely happy with. Once people got to play the games and vote for their favorites, we ended up winning the jam!

I’m really happy with how the game turned out and especially like the graphics!

The game is also available to play on Itch.io.
